Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX Revealed – A Step Towards The Future

Recently at the CES Technology show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled something big. As the world continues to charge towards electric efficiency, pun intended, Mercedes-Benz is one of the major manufacturers that is excelling at this new movement by leaps and bounds. They’ve unveiled their newest prototype called the “VISION EQXX” at the CES Technology show, which shows a promising future of their role in the ever-transforming EV future.

Their key note fact of the Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX, is the battery technology. Mercedes-Benz is promising how the battery tech in the EQXX concept will be real and usable in future production cars. The Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX features an electric range of greater than 620 miles on a single charge, in which Mercedes-Benz states this equates to a consumption of less than 10 kWh of energy per 100 kilometers. New battery technology, aerodynamics, and exterior design make this electric range and efficiency possible. The mid-to-rear end of the VISION EQXX gives us some serious McLaren Speedtail vibes. Efficient air flow allows for the car to cut through the air, making it easier for battery tech to not work as hard.

Everything about the Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX is new and developed in-house by Mercedes-Benz. This prototype features a 201 horsepower electric motor that drives the rear wheels only and has a top speed of 87mph, which is more than enough for most people, but future production models using this new battery tech will be capable of much more power and will no doubt be All Wheel Drive. Mercedes-Benz has been able to develop this new battery technology with opting for classic “air-cooling” of the battery and in-house developed next-generation Silicon Carbide Anodes. To quote the experts directly:

“Instead of just making the battery bigger and thus heavier, the energy density has been significantly improved – to 200 Wh/kg to be precise. This enables the battery of the VISION EQXX to store 100 kWh, whilst taking up 50% less space and weighing 30% less than batteries with comparable capacity. State-of-the-art silicon anodes have been used in combination with ultra-lightweight materials from Formula One, for instance, which has significantly increased the battery capacity. The electric system, which supplies power to many auxiliary units in the VISION EQXX, draws additional energy from solar cells on the roof. This reduces the energy demands of the high-volt system and ultimately leads to more range. On a single day with ideal conditions, this can produce up to 25 kilometres extra range for long-distance journeys.” ~ Mercedes-Benz (Source)

In addition  to the efficiency and range advancements, the Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX is quite the looker. The interior and exterior are definitely spaceship-like and 100% look like a car of the future. The entire interior, apart from certain plastics and metals for hardware purposes, is made from all sustainable materials. Materials include; Mushrooms, Bamboo, Cactus, and Vegan Silk. While being sustainable, there’s no question future Mercedes-Benz EV models will feature the latest tech that is all digital screens and touch free (voice activated). To conclude, the Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX is fantastic and shows why Mercedes-Benz is one of the top manufacturers for consistently creating the future. We look forward to what Mercedes-Benz brings to the table!
