The Mercedes-Benz SL has been a world icon ever since it came out for customer-production in 1954. Just today, Mercedes has revealed the brand new SL! This time around, production has changed entirely into new hands and the many aspects have been shifted.
The Mercedes-Benz SL is now under complete control and built solely by AMG, which is astonishing. Initially when this news hit awhile back, we know many were both confident and worried. Worried because people that love the SL didn’t want AMG to ruin one of the greatest GT cars ever built by just making it a performance beast, but also confident because AMG does know what they’re doing and they make some of the greatest vehicles on the face of the planet. Getting straight to the point, AMG knocked the 2022 SL out of the park and it truly is phenomenal!
The 2022 SL will be available in two variants: the SL55 and SL63. Both versions will use AMG’s now-famous 4.0L Twin-Turbocharged V8, with the SL55 producing 469hp / 516tq and the SL63 producing 577hp / 590tq. Equipped with a new 9-Speed Automatic Transmission, the SL will now be available for the first time ever in All Wheel Drive. AMG have chosen to utilize Mercedes’ 4Matic+ AWD System with Variable Torque Distribution. Combine the power, new transmission, and all wheel drive with a brand new launch control system, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL will not disappoint when it comes to performance.
The exterior has changed quite a bit, using Mercedes’ new front end, rear end, and headlight/taillight styling of more rounded corners but offering a “muscly” type of feel. It is still very much “SL” looking. AMG has ditched the hard top convertible for a soft-top roof in order to save weight, 46 lbs to be exact. The roof can be operated up to driving speeds of 31 mph and can fully open/close in 15 seconds. This may come to a small disappointment for some, as the SL has been a hard top for the longest time, but it was a smart move in saving weight for performance. The door handles share the same cool tech as the brand new S-Class, in which they electronically come in and out when needing to operate the door from the outside. Lastly regarding the exterior, AMG is offering a “Aerodynamic Package” for customers to additionally purchase if desired. This package comes with active front underbody aero, bigger rear diffuser. and upgraded aerodynamic flics on both the front and rear bumpers.
The interior has drastically changed as well. For the first time ever, the SL is a 4-seater. To be entirely honest, we understand the purpose but are not necessarily on board with it. If anything, just make it a rear shelf to place your things on top off. That’s our only criticism of the entire car, everything else we love! The SL comes standard with leather AMG Sport Seats or can be upgraded to leather/alcantara AMG Performance Seats. You can’t go wrong with either, but we like the AMG Performance Seats. The SL is fitted with Mercedes’ latest MBUX voice-controlled infotainment system and is contained inside a brand new 11.9″ touch display that can tilt anywhere from 12° to 32° based on the driver’s preference. Also, a brand new 12.3″ digital gauge cluster and heads-up display with Augmented Reality make sure the SL is not just an AMG performance machine, but still a very much comfortable GT luxury car.
We know the new Mercedes-Benz SL is meant for 2022, but do not have exact pricing as of yet. As typical SL’s go, we can expect the SL55 to be in the $120K-$140K range and the SL63 in the $160K-$180K range depending on tax, options, and further specifications. We do love the brand new Mercedes-Benz SL and are glad AMG absolutely killed it. Congratulations!
