Formula 1 USA Grand Prix Grand Prix Recap October 2021 – Strategy

Round 17 of Formula 1, the United States Grand Prix, was a Pit Stop Strategy of Hard Tires unlike any other! The track was so hot, even with hard tires the drivers were struggling with tire life and endurance. Let’s go over the race details that occurred in Austin, Texas!

*Starting Grid*

  1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
  2. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
  3. Sergio Perez (Red Bull)

As Lap 1 started, we immediately saw drama between Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull). Lap 1 Turn 1 Lewis Hamilton forced Max Verstappen on the outside, slightly pushing Max wide off the track whilst approaching the corner since he started P2, giving him the upper hand and claiming first. No damage occurred to Max and the race continued. Though additionally, we did see an accident between Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and Nicholas Latifi (Williams). Nicholas Latifi’s front right tire caught Lance Stroll’s rear left tire approaching Turn 1 in Lap 1, causing Lance Stroll to perform a full spin out. No damage occurred and the race continued, deemed a racing incident.

Lap 4, we saw a very early pit stop from Esteban Ocon (Alpine) to put on a fresh set of Hard tires and to change the front wing due to receiving damage from an overtake by Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo).

By Laps 8-16, we saw almost every team pit for equipping Hard tires to their cars. The pit-strategy for this race was a 2-stopper and drivers were consistently complaining about the heat of the track causing the tires to wear out quickly and effect the endurance. There was no way Soft or Medium tires would suffice.

On Lap 15, Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) had to unfortunately retire his car and settle for a DNF due to suspension issues.

Lap 17 displayed an amazing battle between long time friends and former F1 world champions Fernando Alonso (Alpine) and Kimi Raikkonen (Alfa Romeo). Alonso was battling Kimi throughout several corners and towards the end of their fight, Alonso had forced Raikkonen on the outside via the racing line and had actually caused some damage. Alonso’s front right tire had connected with the mid-body floor-board and aerodynamic pieces of Kimi’s car, causing some aero parts to break and fly off. No further damage occurred and the race resumed.

Alonso further found himself in drama on Lap 21 and Lap 25. On Lap 21, Alonso flew off the track when attempting to overtake Antonio Giovinazzi but then corrected and came out ahead. It is an F1 rule that a driver cannot overtake another driver by coming back onto the track from the outside. Thus, Alonso was forced to give the position back to Giovinazzi. Ironically, Giovinazzi did the same exact thing to Alonso on Lap 25, in which he was forced to give the position back to Alonso.

On Laps 30-40, every team came back into the pits to fit new Hard tires on their cars. The track was eating their tires alive due to heat.

Lap 42 presented another forced DNF, Esteban Ocon (Alpine) had to retire due to mechanical issues.

Lap 51 presented another retirement, Fernando Alonso (Alpine) due to a Rear Wing issue. This concludes to 3 drivers being out of the race due to mechanical failures.

Towards the closing of the race, we saw an epic Kimi Raikkonen (Alfa Romeo) spin out into the gravel on Lap 53 and an amazing battle between Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes). In the end, Max was able to keep the pace and defend his first place position!
