Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix Grand Prix Recap November 2021

Round 18 of Formula 1, the Mexico City Grand Prix, started off with the massively unexpected and ended with the expected. Let’s go over the race details that occurred in Mexico City, Mexico!

*Starting Grid*

  1. Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes)
  2. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
  3. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)

As Lap 1 started the 71 lap race, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) made an excellent move on the outside to surpass Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) as the two competed for the first place position. Shortly following Max’s pass on the Mercedes duo, massive traffic and damage occurred as the rest of the drivers approached Turn 1. Daniel Ricciardo’s (McLaren) front wing hit Valtteri Bottas’ (Mercedes) rear tires, causing Bottas to completely spin out and drop to 18th place. This spin out further caused an accident between Esteban Ocon (Alpine), Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri), and Mick Schumacher (HAAS). The sudden halt of traffic left Esteban Ocon (Alpine) with nowhere to go and two further accidents occurred. Yuki Tsunoda’s (AlphaTauri) Right Rear tire collided with Ocon’s Front Left Tire, shooting him in the air and taking on mechanical damage. Mick Schumacher (HAAS) experienced the exact same thing but on Ocon’s right side, causing him to shoot up in the air and also take on mechanical damage. Ocon was able to continue on, but both Tsunoda and Schumacher had to retire due to damage. The result of this mishap wasn’t necessarily anyone’s fault, it was just a terrible traffic jam that led drivers with nowhere to go. The event caused a Yellow Safety Car and the race resumed on the end of Lap 4/starting of Lap 5.

Fast forward to Lap 16, teams started to open up the discussion of whether this would be a 1 or 2 stop race, as two drivers had already pitted for fresh new “Hard” tires.

By Lap’s 30-34 and 40-45, every team had pitted at least once for either Medium or Hard tires. The Mexico City Grand Prix can be difficult to pass, as there’s only two “real” opportunities to pass. Thus, there were very little battles and passing throughout the entire race. We did see excellent 2nd place defending from Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) against Sergio Perez (Red Bull) towards the last few laps. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) was completely dominating the entire race and was far ahead of everyone. In the end, Verstappen did take the victory!

The results of the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix resulted in the following:
