Formula 1 Portugal Race Recap May 2021 – Organized, but Windy!

Formula 1…what a fantastic race this past Sunday was! The Portuguese Grand Prix (Algarve International Circuit) proved itself as a magnificent track with it’s various upward and downward slopes and high gusts of wind. The track was particularly difficult to keep traction when at the highest point, where the wind was most relevant. The driver’s truly did a magnificent job keeping it together, as Round 3 of this year’s Formula 1 season was quite organized! The majority of the race was under control with not many crashes/accidents or spinoffs. The race did begin with some excitement though as Kimi Raikkonen had an incident.

Starting off into Lap 2, Kimi Raikkonen (Alfa Romeo) became distracted by making a change on his steering wheel and had a collision with his teammate Antonio Giovinazzi. Antonio Giovinazzi’s C41 was fine, though Kimi Raikkonen’s was not. As Kimi Raikkonen was making his steering wheel adjustments, his front right wing got caught underneath Antonio’s rear left tire, thus causing his front wing to completely break off and get cuahgt underneath his front tires. Ultimately, sending Kimi Raikkonen into the gravel and resulting in a DNF.

Moving all the way into lap 56 of the 66 lap race, we did see Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri) lock up and take a small spin off into the gravel. No damage was done and Yuki proceeded into the race. The rest of the race was filled with excellent driving and overtakes, demonstrating a constant 66-lap battle between Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes), Sergio Perez (Red Bull), and Max Verstappen (Red Bull). While the Red Bull duo fought hard, they could not overcome the giant that is the W12 Mercedes. The finishing result of the Portuguese Grand Prix was as following:

  1. Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes
  2. Max Verstappen – Red Bull
  3. Valtteri Bottas – Mercedes – (Also recorded the fastest Lap at 1:19:865)
